CAUSES OF DRY SKIN
SIGN & SYMPTOMS
A very common condition in which lack of appropriate amount of water on the most superficial layer of skin and this superficial layer of skin is also known as EPIDERMIS.
It affects both gender equally and also affects all the age group of people but it occurs more frequently in older aged person.
Some areas of our body is more prone to dry skin like arms, hands, and particularly lower legs.
FILAGGRIN – it is epidermal protein, and with the help of lipid (fat) it helps in prevention of dry skin.
Dry skin can be treated easily but untreated dry skin may lead to:-
Fine crack line on skin surface
Wrinkles- Due to wrinkles you will look older.
CAUSES OF DRY SKIN:-
The reason which causes dry skin is categorized into two group
EXTERNAL CAUSES:- It includes
>Over use of sanitizers.
>Over washing with harsh soap:- soaps contains emulsifier that removes natural oil from the skin surface.
>Low humidity in environment and room.
>Use of nylon skin loofa for rubbing and cleaning skin.
>Use of room heater during cold weather.
>Taking bath in lukewarm water.
>Taking bath in chlorinated water pool.
INTERNAL CAUSES:- It includes
>It may be genetic, and so it can affect all members of the family.
>With increasing age, the number of the functional sweat gland decreases so in older age problem of dry Skin is more.
>If you are more addicted to COFFEE, CIGARETTE, ALCOHOL then all these causes dehydration in your body which leads to dry skin.
>It also occurs more frequently in person who is under medication of DIURETICS, as it removes more water from our body resulting dry skin.
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS:-
>Rough dry skin
>Red plaque on skin
Itchy sink- continuously itching can lead to itching cycle or itch scratch cycle (it happens more during sleeping, because during sleeping time our conscious control of scratching is low or none, so if we feels itchy we will scratch our skin which exacerbates the itch and so on.)
>It can be easily identified through visual inspection.
>Your medical practitioner may ruled out this through your previous medical history.
>In rare cases skin biopsy required.
1] HOME REMEDIES:-
>As dry skin mainly occurs due to water loss from our body, so our main aim should keep our body hydrated and hence we should drink more water (drinking water is also beneficial in other way also) so it will prevent dry skin.
>Use of soaps during bathing causes wash off layer of natural oil from skin surface, so it will cause dry skin so avoid using of too much soap and it will reduce dry skin. If you will take bath in fresh water only, then your body will clean approx. 80-85%, but you should regularly use soaps and clean at neck, under arms, and private parts.
>Immediate after taking bath when your skin is still slightly wet, then you should apply or use moisturizer on skin so it will prevent you from dry skin, and also it will keep your skin soft.
>Protect your skin from sunlight and dried wind.
>Don’t wear woolen cloth in directly contact with skin as it will irritate your skin and leads to dry skin.
>Don’t use too much washing powder during washing clothes because its chemicals provokes dry skin.
>Keep water in an open bowl in room as it will keep your room humidify which will prevent dry skin.
>Use moisturizer like virgin coconut oil (It is prepared from coconut through squeezing or pressing it) and it is best moisturizer.
2] MEDICAL REMEDIES:-
If all the above mentioned remedies don’t work then you must consult to your nearby physician.
Your physician may prescribe you TOPICAL STEROID CREAMS like
Hydrocortisone 1% cream.
Triamcinolone 0.1% cream.
But long term use of these types of corticosteroid cream may cause skin thinning and stretch marks.
Or anti-itch oral medications (oral anti-histamines) like Diphenhydramine or Hydroxyzine.
Untreated dry skin may develop into Lichen simplex chronicus & Prurigo.
