WHAT IS CHLAMYDIA ?
Chlamydia is a most common sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world and it is caused by CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS BACTERIUM.
It also co-infects with gonorrhea and tend to occur together.
It is most commonly spread through vaginal sex, oral sex and anal sex or during child birth to baby from mother.

Since 1994 chlamydia has been the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI).
It is 50 times more common than SYPHILIS & 3 times more common than GONORRHEA.
It may cause serious problem like Permanent Damage to the Reproductive System.

 

MODE OF TRANSMISSION OF CHLAMYDIA
Most commonly spread through sex.
Sex is the most common way; (either vaginal sex, oral sex, or anal sex) to spread infections of chlamydia from one person to another person.
Child birth is another way for transmission of infection from mother to the babies.

It can also spread through direct contact of bacteria to our blood stream, through this direct contact it can spread from one person to another person or from one part of the body to another part of the same person.

Chlamydia is not spread by means of sharing towels, sharing cloths, sharing swimming pools, eating together.

 

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS OF CHLAMYDIA
Most of the peoples do not show any symptoms.

SYMPTOMS IN WOMEN
> Abdominal pain.
> Large Quantities of Vaginal Discharge that may be foul smelling and yellowish in color.
> Bleeding between Periods.
> Inflammation of the Vagina & Urethra, which may cause-

-Burning Sensation during urination
-Urethritis
-Cervicitis
-Painful intercourse
-Swelling in the vagina

> Swelling around the Anus.
> In females the infection may spread to the Abdominal Cavity through fallopian tube that may further lead to the Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).
> Itching or burning sensation in or around the vagina.

SYMPTOMS IN MEN
> Discharge from penis
> Swelling and tenderness of testicles.
> Anal irritation
> Pain and burning during urination
> Burning and Itching Around the opening of the penis.

 


DIAGNOSIS OF CHLAMYDIA

62001123 – blood sample positive with chlamydia trachomatis

> Medical professionals can diagnose it clinically.
> Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT)– It is fast and more sensitive and more specific and less likely to false positive result.
> Traditional Gram staining test but is not much useful because chlamydia trachomatis is a intracellular organism.


 

 

PREVENTION OF CHLAMYDIA

MODE OF PREVENTION OF STI THROUGH CONDOMS

> Most effective method is stop transmission of infection by using condoms during sex or using a dental rubber dam during oral sex.
> Limit the number of Sex Partners.
> If you are diagnosed as Chlamydia or having Chlamydia or any other sexually transmitted disease and receive treatment , you should notify all of your recent sex partners so that they can see a doctor and be treated, because Chlamydia often occurs without symptoms hence people who are infected may unknowingly infect their sex partners.
> Or visit periodically to the nearby doctors for regular Screening.

 

TREATMENT OF CHLAMYDIA
Treatment of Chlamydia is very important because, if left Untreated it can cause other long term health consequences.
Antibiotics are effective to treat the Chlamydia; AZITHROMYCIN is the drug of choice with just single dose, or DOXYCYCLINE for one week.
Other alternatives Medicines for Chlamydia which is recommended by CDC.
> ERYTHROMYCIN
> LEVOFLOXACIN
> OFLOXACIN

Some People might experience side effect after taking antibiotics including
-Nausea
-Vomiting
-Diarrhea
-Stomach Pain
-Gastrointestinal issues

COMPLICATIONS OF CHLAMYDIA
What will happen if chlamydia is left untreated?
If you do not get treated for Chlamydia then you run the risk of several health problems as follows:-

FOR MEN
In men Chlamydia can cause a condition called
> Non-gonococcal urethritis( NGU)– an infection of the urethra ( the tube by which men and women passes urine).
> Epididymitis- an infection of the epididymis (the tube that caries sperm away from the testes).
> Proctitis- an inflammation of the rectum.
> Reactive Arthritis.

FOR WOMEN
If chlamydia is left untreated in women then it can cause.
> Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which can lead to damage of the fallopian tubes (the tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus) due to which infertility occurs (the inability to get pregnant & have children).
> Ectopic pregnancy – when the fertilized egg implants and develops outside the uterus.
> Premature baby birth (giving birth too early).
> Infections can be passed along from the mother to her child during childbirth, causing eye infections, blindness or pneumonia in the newborn.
